Sustainable Acrylics made using Corn instead of Petroleum by Minnesota Starup

A Startup company based on University of Minnesota research is attempting to popularise a method for producing acrylic acid, an essential constituent in dozens of products ranging from paint to diapers, using corn-derived lactic acid rather than petroleum. Lakril Technologies has won a competition sponsored by the National Corn Growers Association for businesses that use field corn in novel ways. The Minnesota Maize Research and Promotion Council, which distributes cash from the state’s corn checkoff program, has also awarded it a $100,000 grant.

Brandon Fast, a Mountain Lake corn farmer and chairman of the Corn Research and Promotion Council, said, “We’re always looking for new ways to utilize corn. Dauenhauer invented the process that Lakril Technologies is using, and he co-founded the company with Chris Leonard, a chemical engineer who will be its president.

Dauenhauer’s technique is protected by a patent held by the University of Minnesota, which the company is licensing exclusively. In addition, the company has chosen Chicago as its home to commercialize its technique by the end of 2024. Acrylic acid and its derivatives are a $10 billion global market for a transparent liquid with a pungent odor.
